| KPLU Prepares |
|
On-air hosts, Reporters and Announcers at KPLU FM Radio are pulling together contract proposals for the start of bargaining. Their contract with Pacific Lutheran University expires on the last day of May. Many KPLU talent want to bargain about increased duties that have arisen as a result of the station's growing presence on the world wide web. They also are comparing wages to other public radio colleagues working for the University of Washington at KUOW FM. |

| Broadcasters from all over the nation met in Chicago in March to talk about emerging issues. New technologies took center stage, as broadcasters discussed their need to establish jurisdiction over alternate delivery systems for their news and entertainment programming, and to determine what kind of remuneration is appropriate for extra work and additional training required to service the internet. |

| KING WRITERS |
|
Writers and video editors at KING TV will bargain this summer on a new three-year contract. During previous negotiations, what had been two separate bargaining units, merged into one. The expectation and promise was that video editors, would gain additional expertise as staff writers through company-provided training. Assessment of that training is likely to be a subject of bargaining this time around. |

| AFTRA sends out its best wishes to fellow member, Kathi Goertzen, who underwent brain surgery (again) this month to deal with a recurring tumor. Members were heartened to learn that the operation in March was more successful than had been hoped. Kathi has been lead anchor at KOMO TV for more than 20 years. |

| The hunt continues for an Executive Director for the Seattle Local of AFTRA. Dozens of applicants have come forward, but none that has meet the Board of Director's expectations for fulfilling the unique qualifications for the job. |
