Mariners Protest AFTRA members, upset that the Mariners Baseball Team is having its radio commercials performed by non-union talent, staged a hand-billing protest at the opening game this year, and may be planning future follow-up demonstrations. Members received audition notivications recently that stipulated that wages would be paid on a non-union bases: that is, the casting agent wanted non-union performers to accept a one time only fee for doing a radio commercial. Those commercials are produced by the Copacino Company, in Seattle. The Mariners did not respond to AFTRA's communications prior to the protest.

Commercials and Independent Contractors: It is unlawful for a commercials producer to treat performers as independent contractors. The law presumes that actors are employees and that contractors must take out payroll deductions and taxes on their behalf. Many producers violate tha law, by paying talent a set cash fee. This shifts the tax burden to the performer, with potential dire consequences.

LABOR RADIO EXPANDS. This union project, led by AFTRA, has expanded coverage to Snohomish, Skagit and Whatcom counties with reports on Wednesdays being broadcast over KRKO AM. In addition, Labor Neighbor Radio is negotiating with the Spokane Central Labor Council for reports that will go to the Inland Empire. Labor Neighbor Radio, celebrated its first year on the air, in January.
